Wind and Statistics
Jef  L. Teugels

Historically, wind has been almost synonymous with unpredictability and randomness. It is therefore surprising that up to now only few attempts have been made to model wind as a stochastic process. We scan the literature for contributions that try to capture one or more of the stochastic aspects of wind in its broadest sense possible. Apart from wind speeds and wind directions, we discuss possible models for breezes, gusts, tornadoes and hurricanes, considering them as meteorologically different forms of wind. We will also cover the impact of wind studies on applications in civil engineering, oceanography, meteorology and environmetrics. A gently annotated bibliography will be available.
