(Free of charge for everyone)
On Tuesday, June 18, 2002, at 6 p.m. a welcome cocktail will be held at Palazzo Ducale (location).
Former seat of the Governement of the Republic of Genova, the Palazzo Ducale was built in the 13th century in the heart of the old city. The original body, incorporating the Medieval palaces of the Abbots and Alberto Fieschi, developed into what became the Doges' residence from 1339. In the late 16th century Andrea Ceresola, better known as "Vannone", restructured the Palace in the late Mannerist style. He enlarged it with a grand covered hall, two colonnaded courtyards and the imposing double staircase leading to the main floor. After the fire of 1777, the architect Simone Cantoni was commissioned to reconstruct the central body of the Palace, the halls of the Minore and Maggiore Consiglio and the façade overlooking Piazza Matteotti in the Neoclassical style. During the 20th century the Palazzo Ducale underwent two important restoration works. In 1935, after architect Orlando Grosso's project, three portals were opened onto Piazza De Ferrari and the façade was painted with trompe-l'oeil design. The architect Giovanni Spalla supervised the second restoration work ended in 1992. Today the Palace is one of the largest, most important and modern cultural centres in Italy housing exhibition rooms, historical archives, libraries, halls for congresses, bars and restaurants and provides a unique venue for conferences, exhibitions and concerts.
