Galen R. Shorack

Galen Shorack received a BS (1960) and a MS (1962) in Mathematics from University of Oregon, Eugene, Oregon, and a Ph.D.(1965) in Statistics from Stanford , Palo Alto, CA, in 1965. He was an Assistant Professor, Associate Professor and Professor in the Department of Mathematics(UW) at the University of Washington, Seattle, WA, from 1965 to 1980, where he still has an adjunct appointment. He was a founding member of the Department of Statistics(UW) at the U of W where he is now a Professor. He was on sabbatical leave at the then Mathematisch Centrum [now the Centrum voor Wiskunde en Informatica (CWI)] in Amsterdam during 1969-1970 (supported by a National Science Foundation (NSF) fellowship). His second sabbatical leave was at the Australian National University (ANU) and CSIRO in Canberra, Australia during 1977-78 (also on an NSF grant). His third sabbatical was at the University of Leiden (ULeiden) in The Netherlands in September-December 1989 and the Universita' degli Studi di Roma "La Sapienza" (URoma) during January-August 1990. Shorack's research interests include limit theorems in statistics, the theory of empirical processes, trimming-Winsorizing and regular variation. He has served as an Associate Editor of the Annals of Mathematical Statistics (Annals of Statistics) from 1972-1975. He was elected a Fellow of the Institute of Mathematical Statistics (IMS) in 1974.
