Refereeing Projects

This Web page contains information about the refereeing projects that are part of the Stat 582 work. Latest update January 17.

The standard setup of an editorial board is as follows. The editor assigns associate editor to a paper, makes the editorial decision, and communicates it (together with the referees' reports and the report from the associate editor) to the authors. The associate editor assigns referees, collects their reports, and makes a recommendation to the editor. The referee makes an independent assessment of the paper, and communicates a recommendation as well as a report outlining criticisms in large and small scale to the associate editor.

Each of you will, as referees, receive a manuscript, a letter from an associate editor, and (slightly different from an actual refereeing assignment) a variety of material on what is expected in a referee's report. Your report will be due in 6 weeks, and should be accompanied by a letter to the associate editor where you make a recommendation (and make any comments you feel are important but that you would rather not the authors see). The authors will receive copies of the referee's reports as well as a letter from the associate editor (but not of your letter to the associate editor).

Here are some of the things to think of:

In order to assess these questions, you need to study the journal to get a feel for what type of papers are appropriate for it, how long they tend to be, and at what technical level they tend to be.

Some recent discussion of the refereeing process in statistical journals may also be useful reading. Feel free to contact me to discuss any of these issues.
