Relation between dependence and evidence

• What evidence we have can influence whether two quantities are dependent or independent:
  • Earthquakes and burglaries will generally be unrelated, but if we know the alarm went off, then this induces dependency between them (since an earthquake makes a burglary less likely).
  • Conversely whether Holmes crashed and Watson crashed are dependent, until we discover that all the roads are salted.
