Homogenization and extremes

The traditional tools used to evaluate the homogeneity of temperature and precipitation series have been developed under the assumption of temporal independence. Work by Lund and others indicates that the homogeneity tests do not have the advertised size. We study the effect of long-term memory on these tests, and develop more appropriate tools for homogenization. We also look at what difference homogenization makes to estimates of trends in extremes.
